watching.waiting.
alone without a care.
the land around him silent. all movement had ceased to exist. the fog that drifted down from the high slopes of the mountain crept stealthily along. it rolled like clouds, wafting through evergreens and spruce trees. the sound of trickling water came into hearing range as the river cut through the peak. trees rustled as small creatures took shelter within them. fish surfaced to gulp bugs from the water's edge. birds called out through the damp, misty sky. the dew on every blade of grass condensed into pools. the land was secluded and private, like it held some secret from the world that if you whispered would break. it was paradise in every sense of the word. not many had the privilege to live here, so judas would seize the opportunity. his white bodice wiggled its way though the brush and popped out in a small clearing. a few willow trees surrounded the bend in the river where he stood, draping about gloomily. he raised he arabic head and peered about with massive brown eyes. he was home.
his creamy white coat was dappled in the shade of the trees. delicate hooves hidden in the lush grass. his grey muzzle nosed about, poking things and prying them. he scented each and every possible object, nares retracting to hold in the aroma. long legs carried him to the water's edge where his reflection blinked into the surface of the river. hot air expelled from his nose, vapor in the fog. judas lowered his chiseled face, mouth slowly spooning the crisp liquid. he lifted his head when finished, water droplets beaded on his pelt. this place was magnificent. it was a miracle it had not been claimed at the time. judas had surely lucked out. with a nod of approval, he called out a claim. "to those who will listen, i judas, set claim to this land."
